The project of Puerto Mayor was paralysed by court order, after ANSE and Greenpeace’s action. But the area remains occupied by building works. Some days ago, the Regional Government promoted a public consultation, which includes building a new port, among other measures.
ANSE proposes the environmental restoration of the sandbanks of Puerto Mayor, recovering natural spaces. You can see the proposal in this video, and you can sign a petition to the Regional and National Government, asking for the restoration of the area.

Your letter will be submitted to:

- Mr. Mayor of the San Javier City Council.
Dear Political Heads,
As you certainly know, the Mar Menor Lagoon and La Manga are unique natural areas in the Spanish and Western Mediterranean coast. They conform one of the largest coastal lagoons in Europe and it enjoys different categories of protected areas due to its relevant natural values (Ramsar Wetland of International Significance, SCI-Site of Community Importance, SPA- Special Protection Area, Zone of Special Interest for the Protection of the Mediterranean and Natural Protected Space).
Unfortunately, the excessive direct human pressure on its coasts and indirect pressure by human activities developed in the Campo de Cartagena, an agricultural plain, has produced an intense transformation on the landscape and its ecosystems. As a matter of fact, It has reached the point that high pollution is acknowledged as extremely severe and it is negatively affecting to beach users, both residents and tourists. We have recently learnt of a survey promoted by the Government of the Autonomous Community of the Región de Murcia intended to gather the public opinion about the building of different infrastructures, among which we can find the Puerto Mayor project that aimed at building a major seaport for 900 boats. It was stopped after the intervention of ANSE and Greenpeace, the Spanish Ministry for the Environment, and finally, a court ruling.
I would like to show my opposition to the building of that new seaport and my support to ANSE’s restoration project in the Estacio Beach (Caleta del Estacio), creating a wild sand dune park with a controlled public use.
Nowadays, more and more people consider that the destruction of La Manga and Mar Menor Lagoon must stop, and a change of course is needed for the recovery of a part of the disappeared landscapes. This will be on great benefit to the natural and cultural values as well as the quality of life of the inhabitants and the tourist offer in this coastal area.
Please, prove that the lesson has been learnt and help to change our future. The recovery of coastal spaces does not only benefit nature. It will also benefit people, and local and regional economy, as has been widely demonstrated with the protection of nearby natural spaces.
I would be grateful if you keep me informed of the decision you take about this issue.
Yours faithfully.
